"Glaciers are melting faster than ever"

On Saturday, March 22nd, let’s come together over water for this year’s World Water Day! It’s a perfect opportunity to bring your community together to discuss, and even act, on water issues locally and globally. Water is something we all have in common!

What is World Water Day

World Water Day is the yearly United Nation Observance of the importance of freshwater. Events are held globally on an annual theme in order to raise awareness of key water issues and goals, such as access to safely managed drinking water and the 2.2 billion people who don’t have it.

2025 theme

This year’s theme is Glacier Preservation. Ancient glaciers are now retreating faster and faster, affecting the entire globe. As they melt and sea levels rise, communities are at increasing risk of natural disaster, from drought to flood. Saving glaciers is crucial for everyone.

Things libraries can do to raise awareness

Check out the We are Water project. We are Water is a cooperative effort led by the Education & Outreach program at the University of Colorado’s Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences in partnership with the Space Science Institute’s STAR Net team. The project hopes to create a space for those living in the Four Corners Region to find resources and community relating to water.

We also invite you to share resources, activities, and learning experiences with your patrons in celebration of World Water Day! Check out the featured resources below to engage your community:

On Theme Activities

A Drop in the Bucket – STEM Clearinghouse

Learn about fresh water sources: Through a visual presentation, patrons will learn the different sources of freshwater, and the relative ratios of these water sources on the earth.

Polar Bears Go With the Floes – STEM Clearinghouse

In this collaborative board game, participants work together to determine the fate of a lone polar bear on an ice floe. Players will build an understanding of how human actions impact global change as the game progresses.

Earth: Artistically Balanced – STEM Clearinghouse

Patrons depict the science behind Earth’s climate system as art, which may be created on a large scale and displayed at the library or made on a smaller scale to take home.

Flubber Flows – STEM Clearinghouse

Children use Flubber to investigate how a solid can flow! They predict and model the properties of glaciers, view images of advancing glaciers, and create their own Flubber flow!

Ice-y Experiences – STEM Clearinghouse

Children play “Ice Bingo” using cards that contain squares with different types of ice experiences — like getting their tongues stuck on ice!

Adult and Teen Programming

Check out recommended books and start a book club to talk about water in the Southwestern U.S.

Invite your community to engage in a dialogue about shared experiences with water with this Conversation Guide.

Host a Water Celebration Event with the We are Water Planning Guide and Scavenger Hunt.

Invite your patrons to share their own unique stories about what water means to them.
